About NCLE
The National Consortium for Language Education (NCLE) is funded by the Department for Education (DfE) and is delivered by the IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society (UCL IOE) in partnership with the British Council and the Goethe-Institut.
NCLE believe that knowledge of languages and intercultural agility can help to foster universal understanding and contribute to building a peaceful and harmonious world future. In order to take our place in a globalised economy, we need more and better language skills, adding value to and widening opportunities for our students, our community and our society.
The key aims for NCLE are to:
Encourage high-quality language teaching in schools
Increase Languages uptake at GCSE
Support levelling up opportunities for disadvantaged pupils
Aid the performance of boys
Better recognise the rich diversity of languages in addition to English spoken by one in five young people in schools.
Supporting this work is a national network of 25 Language Hubs. Harnessing the expertise within their region and building on the recommendations from the 2016 Language Pedagogy Review, the Hubs will work closely with a network of partner schools and affiliate schools to re-energise language teaching and learning. Ultimately, the Language Hubs hope to encourage more pupils to study, to enjoy and to profit from their language learning opportunities in primary school and beyond.
NCLE also recognises the value of home, heritage, and community languages and the value bi-lingual learners bring to a school community. Language Hubs will support schools in their region to celebrate all languages and will signpost supporting materials, good practice and build relationships with supplementary schools.
"It is astonishing how much enjoyment one can get out of a language that one understands imperfectly."
